If Gas prices REALLY get out of hand, is there anything legal way they the government can intervene?

I dont think so otherwise I'm sure they would have stepped in long ago. They can subsidise gas to a certain extent. It really is a worrying thought isn't it. I remember hearing a while ago that when gas reaches $100/barrel, we will be in trouble. Well we now at $118/barrel. I wonder what govt's solutions are though.
